Many of you ask me why I chose Hekate to devote my practice. Truth is, I didn't. She chose me.
Hekate starting whispering in my ear a few years ago. She came to me at a time I was preparing for the next phase of my life, as Crone. After years of raising a family, taking care of other's needs, trying to meet everyone's expectations, and settling into a quiet, steady lifestyle, I found myself unsettled and unhappy.
That's when she came to me.
It started as a soft whisper, "You're not happy. Let me show you the way." At first, I thought I was losing my mind; but, the voice made sense. Then, the whisper became louder, "Let me show you the way." Finally, I had to acknowledge this was much more than just a voice in my head. I asked, "Who are you?" And, the voice said, "Hekate, Queen of land and sea, Goddess of what is above and below, Titan over All."
Immediately, I began my research on this mysterious Hekate. I had, of course, heard her name before; but, had never actually delved into her story. Sadly, in the beginning, I had to rely on a few obscure ancient texts and a few mentions in books. So, I began my initiation into her service, letting her guide my way. The next couple of years were pretty brutal, to say the least. Hekate guided me to dig deep into my soul, laying me bare. She encouraged me to shed my false skin, to become the woman I was meant to be. It was like a roller coaster ride of the soul, mind and body. So many changes occurred. Some people were left behind. I found my voice and power again. Her keys unlocked doors I would have never thought to open myself. Every opportunity lay, without obstacles, in my path. My perception changed on just about every event in my life. At the end of those two years, I was more confident, intuitive, and powerful than I have ever been in my life.
Now, there are several more resources to go to for more information on Hekate. My favorite book is Keeping Her Keys by Cyndi Brannen. Her book will take you through a year long dedication and initiation into Hekatean witchcraft. I also recommend the Circle for Hekate by Sorita d'Este, for more about Hekate's mythology and ancient studies.
If you feel called by Hekate, I will warn you. Your path will most likely not be easy. A willingness to be truthful with yourself is absolutely necessary. You must be willing to reveal your own faults and shortcomings. It's not always someone else's fault your life is not what you wanted it to be. Allow Hekate to show you the path, both into the underworld, and out of it. She will demand much of you. Sometimes, it may feel like to much. However, if you ask for her guidance, She will come to you. She may also outline what She expects from you, and how you should conduct your rituals with Her. I learned this the hard way, with a flame so huge, the fire department showed up at my door. Err on the side of caution when invoking Hekate's power with fire. That's all I'm going to say about that. Although my path with Hekate has not been easy, I would do it all over again. The ways She has changed my life have been substantial. As I continue to work with Her, I improve and empower myself. Heed Her call, if you dare. She will guide your path, charge your magick, and lead you into a more fulfilling life.
